"Been to a Conference and want to go again?"
"Here are some hints on getting approval to go, and looking professional in doing it"
Most of us agree that going to conferences is good, not only for the food and meeting people but we get a
lot of technical information and ideas to bring back to our work place.
The company managers have invested money in sending you there for various reasons which could include
- Reward for good work
- Sick of you asking to go
Or hopefully
- So you can learn new ideas to bring back to the work place.
But they DO want to see value for money and see that you learnt something to add value to the business, and they will ask about it.
Many of us have returned having had a great time to talk about the partying….. and when a manager stops us in the corridor to ask
us about the conference and asks “what was it like?” we don’t give a very good answer because we are not prepared
So if you want to go away to more conferences, be prepared.
Here are some tips.
- Bring back a range of applicable hand outs, DVD’s, CD’s Brochures etc.
- List the contacts that you made there, they may be of interest to others in your company for networking.
- Prepare an “Elevator Speech”. That is a short pre-prepared talk on what you got out of the conference.
- This should give an overview of the conference and brief description of some of the highlights relevant to your company.
- Only make it short, 2-3 minutes at the most
And practice it a few times
- Arrange a presentation of what you saw and did at the conference for team members, line management and other interested parties.
- Play down the socialisation and play up the value to the company.
- See if your presentation can be put up onto the company’s intranet and advertise that it is there.
This can help you look very professional, organised and willing to share information and definitely someone worthy of attending other conferences because the company gets value from sending you.
Have a good day
